The Anti-Press

The Anti Press due to come out on April 1st is underway in being programmed and articles being written.

Why is my stuff not safe in my own home? I can’t trust my siblings, and it is rather disheartening. And then, no one will take responsibility for their actions, they used it all to “stop someone else from” type of bullshit. It’s annoying and frustrating as hell. If you are going to do something, at least take responsibility for your actions.

Alright, I’m done venting.

Road Trip

We leave for our road trip in less than an hour as I finish my packing, making sure I have my camera’s, batteries, filters, lenses and then, warm clothes. Our trip will take us up to Seattle, WA, across to Maine, down to Florida, and then across the mid-west on our way back to California. Pictures will be up when we get back as I get them developed. Looking forward to this trip.

Getting out. It’s hitting me now.

So I finally get out of the military on 6 Feb 2010, but since I never use leave, I am getting out on November 15th. I have been so busy with surgery and deployments lately that I never really took into account what I was going to be doing once I got out, nor have I taken the steps I need to to start clearing at the end of the month. I need to get everything in order, my household goods to be shipped, the stuff to pack up into my car, and make sure that I have some warm non-military clothing. If i so choose, I never have to wear a uniform again. Now, the question remains, what am I going to do with my life? What will life be like not having to train soldiers that will be placing their life on the line with me? What will a management position be like if I can’t tell them that we need to trust each other with our lives because we aren’t going to be visiting exotic countries, meeting interesting people, and then shooting them. In short, I am so lost where my life is headed right now. I haven’t even had a long enough break to think of what I want to make a living doing. Go back and try and do what I did before the Army, programming websites? Do my passion, photography? Or put the Army to some use, use my Secret clearance, my Satellite Controller training and get a DoD job in that field? Hell, I need to figure things out, and quickly.

So far, the plan is to go to California, move in with my dad for a few months while I find a job and sleeping on the floor of an apartment. I will not be spending my life like that, in fact, I want to spend as little time as possible living like that. I love my dad and all, but I won’t be one of those guys who lives at home and doesn’t go out and make something of themselves, like far too many of my generation have passed as “acceptable”. I lost the job I had in CO because I don’t have two working arms anymore. *sigh* What I would give for my right arm. If someone ever says anything along the lines of “I’d trade an arm for that” you have either two choices…call them a fucking liar, or know that whatever it is they are trading for is something that would bring life-long satisfaction and be worth missing an arm. I haven’t found anything I’d have wanted to trade my arm for. Though now, with the state it’s in…hell, I’d trade it for a good meal.

Anyways, started babbling, so that is the conclusion of this post of which no one will read.

Nikon D5000 Frustration

So, I finally got my new Camera.  All is well and good, upgraded from my Nikon D50.  New features on the D5000

  • HD Movie creation (check)
  • 12.3 Megapixel’s (check)
  • Built in image-sensor cleaning (check)
  • Other settings I never touch for auto-exposure (sure, I guess, check)

Now, why am I frustrated with this?  Here are the things I have currently lost that I loved with my D50

  • Adobe Lightroom (yes, I suppose if I shot in JPEG I could use, but I use RAW (NEF for Nikon)
  • Top screen with quick view of aperture and shutter speed (Now I have to use the full size screen to view that information…waste of battery and utterly useless.  It has a screen that moves and can be folded in to protect it, if my D50 had that with the quick top view, the screen could always remain protected…now it has to be exposed to shoot making it’s ability to fold in more a hassle than a feature.
  • Feels cheap.  When I opened the box it reminded me of a cheap plastic toy.  Sure, lightweight is good, but really?
  • No need for AF-S lens’.  Should have gotten the D90….

So those are my gripes.  Please, Adobe, update your software so I can finally be happy with at least part of my new camera.

A horrible year thus far….

I moved to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO on Jan 10 of this year, I get out of the army Feb 6 of next year with enough leave days saved up that I will be out later this year with terminal leave.  Anyways, to really, really sum things up….

My identity  was stolen, my right arm can’t move and is completely numb (proven my the many many holes it has in it from the doctor stabbing me with a needle.)

Damn Learning Curve

Been a while since I programmed in PHP, even longer since PHP5…like, never. So as I go to finish my photography website I run into the issue that my server now is working with php5, so I got apache 2.2/php5 on my computer as a base of operations and….NOTHING works!  Damn me for using OOP before PHP became an OOP language! It is not backwards compatible with the messed up OOP that was available with PHP4, though I used it because everything as a ‘class’ makes things easier…until now when I have to redo that code, and LW3, to work with the new OOP engine.  I am far behind the PHP5 learning curve since I joined the army.  I am jumping back in.  Time to be a nerd again!  First, have to learn the new language. *sigh* may take longer than expected to get it up, but with real OOP it should preform a lot better once I recode it all.  Hope the army gives me time.

Ok, so I really need to buckle down and finish programming my web site for my photography.  I’ve put it off entirely too long.  Maybe I should link to this blog from the main site for those that might be interested.  On a side note, I read an article about photography and the military; imagine that, I have an invested interest in both.  Read the article here.  I posted my thoughts about the subject on his blog, but here it is for those that don’t want to look through his comments. ;]

As a soldier, and a photographer, I can see the issue in both ways. Granted, I don’t think coffins draped with flags are an invasion of a family, though it definitely can be if the photographer attaches the name of the deceased to the photo.

As for the comment of people on a high horse, and the fact that we need a herd of them. Anyone remember the Vietnam war, and the soldiers that were spit on and ridiculed for partaking in the war regardless of whether they volunteered or were drafted? Yes, please, I want to come home to my country and have a lot of high horses attacking me as they don’t see any other way to protest a war than by making the lives of soldiers difficult. A lot of people don’t agree with the war, personally, I have lost quite a few friends as it is, and there were a bunch of high horses at the funeral of these soldiers – protesting the funeral, and saying it is “God’s” will that these men and women die as they fought in an unjust war. From that, yes, I believe that taking pictures of coffins can be a security risk, not necessarily for the Government, but for those that are fighting, and their families. If people could properly channel their anger at the war, or that young men and women are dying it it so that it didn’t actually hurt those who swear the oath to defend the country that we all live in; then yes, by all means, honor those that die by taking a photograph in their memory. But I do believe the media has done their share in blemishing those that serve already as I walk down some streets and get an enormous amount of swear words flung in my direction because I swore an oath to defend those that I sometimes have doubts of deserving it.

For those that may read this and disagree with what I say, I offer you, walk a mile in our shoes and you will see how the media has affected the perception of the Soldiers that defend America. When you realize the perception, will more photo’s of coffins help or hurt the soldiers?

I don’t think I have much more to add to that actually.  Just came back from a weekend with my brother, I have a few pictures up for those interested.  Damn, I wish I could link to my own site for them right now, though, I can’t, but go to and click the link at the bottom.

Another side note, my uncle did photography for most of his life and traveled around the world seeing it and taking shots for himself.  Though he recently opened his site, so for your viewing pleasure: Marvin Cooper’s Site.

So, there’s an update, some politics, and in general a strong desire to update this more often.

I can also be found on twitter now for those that are interested.

I have wondered, lately especially, does my forehead have ‘Idiot’ written on it?  I wonder this because the people in charge in the army seem to think that everyone is naive or just stupid.  I called IG last week about doing PT after the duty day and about my Platoon Sergeant refusing to pass on my surgery paperwork because “He thinks I made it up” and because “he doesn’t think I need surgery”.  Well, IG called the company, and was told that there is a Battalion policy letter stating that Special pops PT is every day from 1700-1800.  Well, when I went in on friday I was given a Company memo stating that Special pops PT is from 1700-1800 and the memo was dated the 24th, and wasn’t even signed.  On the 22nd is when the company told IG there was Battalion Policy.

Ok, that’s my venting.

Reasons to Re/enlist in the Army

Whoosh!  Haha.  Yeah….so I am trying to come up with a list of reasons why anyone would want to enlist in the army – based on personal experience of course.

1. You miss your mom.
Alright, so this one needs some explaining, new quote for enlistment rather than “Army Strong” should be “Miss your mom?  Get treated like you are 14 all over again – see a local recruiter for details!”  What, not funny?  Don’t believe me?  Join and find out yourself ;-P

2. Great friends that last a lifetime. (Read: [fine print] However short that lifetime may be is subject to the Army’s need to throw people into bullets.)

3.  If they injure you, the will do surgery on you at no expense. (Though if you injure your right foot, the surgery may be on your left foot but hey, it’s good enough for government work.)  And if they do manage to do the correct surgery – you will get plenty of shit because you will most likely walk out of surgery worse than you went it. (But you had surgery, so shut up and stop complaining.)

4. Family time every thursday! (Subject to change without notice, family time is when you get off to sleep; if the army wanted you to have a family, they would have issued you one [and they do! once you want to become a general! ;-P ]

5. You get to be at the forefront of technology.  Um…yeah, that should be the Navy’s thing – they tend to be a hell of a lot closer to that than the army.

6. You get to be stationed in Hawaii! (Read: That doesn’t mean you’ll ever get to enjoy Hawaii…)

7. ….yeah nothing that’s not sarcastic., sorry to disappoint. ;]
